Date: Sunday August 18, 2002 Fish: Shark & Fluke
#: 2/8 Largest: 30 lbs (shark) & 4 lbs (fluke)
Location: 80 foot depths
Crew: Al, Bob (Ronnie-the-dog was a no-show!)
With all the talk about flukers catching shark, we decided to specifically target these inshore shark to see what we could do. So we headed about 10 miles off and set up a chum-slick in some fishy looking water (after waiting over 30 minutes for Ronnie who didn't show, but that's another story-from this point forward he will be known as "Ronnie-the-dog" or just "the dog"). We had some action in about 20 minutes in the form of a blue-fish. It was about that time that I had encouraged Allan to set up for some fluke. Bob followed Allan but I decided to try to target these blues. So I rigged up my fluke rod and set it out with a 5/0 hook haywired to some very light wire with some junk from the bait board (a squid head and a small piece of bunker). I'd say about 20 minutes later, after Allan had 2 short fluke, I felt some nibbling on the line. I let out some line and when I thought the time was right, I reeled and yanked back on the line. "I'm in!". Boy, this blue sure is strong... And he's fighting awfully funny... Soon he was headed up to the bow and under the boat. So I climbed onto the bow in 4 foot seas and saw what I thought was a shark on my line. I held my tongue not wanting to sound stupid. Then I saw it, not only a shark, but a Mako. I yelled "MAKO! MAKO! MAKO!" Ok, it was small, but exciting non-the-less. Once boat side, I handed the rod to Bob and with Allan's help, we actually removed the hook from that well armored jaw. Afterwards, we had one more, and about 10 lost baits. Some of which had to have been shark, probably mako because in one case the wire leader was bitten through! Bob and Allan managed about 14 fluke with 8 keepers between them. In all, it was a GREAT day!
