After a few lousy fluke trips and a week off, the Megabyte made things right! We started out with plans for a fluke trip that would turn into a seabass trip so we decided to stay near the bouy 4 area. Our first stop was about 40' of water off the inlet. 3 boats working that area all had the same dejected look and response-thumbs down. So following reports of action off the round house we joined 5 other boats and made 8 drifts both in 35 foot depths and again in 20 foot depths. Not a touch. We worked westward for no aparant reason except maybe because of the tons of small fish I knew were at Riis park. Stopping off the church and making a drift proved worthless. As did another stop at Riis. Now with desperation setting in we decided to go into Jamaica bay to see what was happening there. As we approached the Marine Parkway bridge, we saw 3 guys on a boat pull in a tripple header. We stopped and made a few drifts. Captain Tom of White Rose Charters boated the first fluke. A nice fat 6.5 pounder jigging a small bucktail tipped with fluke (whch he also caught). Shortly afterwards, Bob added one also. As we adjusted the drift and tuned the technique we began to put fish steadily into the boat in the few hours remaining for the day. Most fish were over 20". Not many trash-fish either, maybe 10 clear nose rays and 5 sea robins were boated. (In the ocean we also had a ton of dog fish). With such great weather and finally finding fluke, it was a great day.
